Discover the best in Kentucky traditional and contemporary fine art, craft, literature, music, film and specialty foods produced in the Commonwealth at this one-of-a-kind arts extravaganza, a delight for art lovers and fans of high-quality handmade goods. Kentucky Crafted: The Market is the Kentucky Arts Council’s signature annual retail showcase that features thousands of Kentucky-made items for sale to the general public.
Visitors should come prepared for an exciting sensory experience. Shoppers can find fine art and craft from Kentucky’s most extraordinary artists, all participants in the Kentucky Arts Council’s Kentucky Crafted program. Artists offer an array of products in varying price ranges, all carrying the Kentucky Crafted brand. Paintings, prints, pottery, glasswork, furniture, sculpture, woodwork, photography, fashion, purses, journals and more are available on The Market retail floor.
When a shopping break is in order, stop by the Kentucky Stage. Featuring some of the state’s best-loved musicians and performers, the Kentucky Stage offers sounds to satisfy a variety of musical interests, including bluegrass, Celtic, blues, pop, world and much more. The Kentucky Stage features multi-talented artists from the arts council’s Performing Arts Directory. After the performance, step across the lobby to the Marketplace and pick up copies of performers’ CDs.
Children and adults alike can participate in hands-on activities offered by area arts organizations to Market visitors at no additional charge. Repurpose T-shirts into beaded market bags with the Living Arts and Science Center on Saturday; or learn the process of wet-felting on Sunday. Children can take a swing on The Explorium’s cool paint pendulum to create art while learning about the laws of physics. When science meets art, it can only result in fun and discovery.
The arts council also presents a special exhibition of the art and tradition of Kentuckians who are masters in the making and repairing of guitars, fiddles, banjos, mandolins, dulcimers and other stringed instruments. See the Made to be Played exhibit, dedicated to the memory of master luthier, craftsman, instrument inventor and musician Homer Ledford (1927-2006).
A show that has received national recognition, The Market celebrates its 31st year in 2013. Kentucky Crafted: The Market has been named the No. 1 Fair & Festival in the country four times by readers of AmericanStyle Magazine. The Southeast Tourism Society has named it a Top 20 Event for 15 years, including 2013.
Kentucky Crafted: The Market 2013 is March 2-3 at the Lexington Convention Center, 430 W. Vine St., Lexington, Ky. The Market hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, March 2, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, March 3. Tickets are $10 for one day or $15 for both days. Children 15 and younger are admitted free.
